He told the Daily Mail that there’s not much left for him in the sport once he’s won a title. “For me, being undisputed world champion was the goal from the beginning. If I can tick that box, I’ve done it all in the sport of mixed martial arts.”
Dustin Poirier once held the interim title, which he lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov at the start of Khabib’s terrifying reign over the lightweight division. However, since Khabib’s retirement earlier this year, Dustin is one of the most exciting contenders to emerge from the power scramble. With the Conor McGregor trilogy firmly in his rearview mirror, Dustin only has one challenge left to face.
Poirier to RETIRE? “I’ll probably just go and sell hot sauce”
And he is wasting no time in planning his assault on the champ. “Oliveira is a very dangerous guy.
I think he’s improving more and more in his striking, putting guys down, he’s long especially for that weight class and I think he’s probably the best jiu-jitsu practitioner in the UFC roster right now. He’s aggressive and very offensive with his jiu-jitsu.
He doesn’t just use it to protect himself or get out of bad positions, he attacks people with it and finishes fights with it so he’s a very dangerous opponent who has paid his dues and fought a long time in UFC.”
Dustin Poirier’s time in the spotlight has been a long time coming. When he originally fought Conor McGregor at featherweight, he lost via TKO, and made some drastic changes to his game. He moved up to lightweight and adopted a more technical approach to his striking.
He lost once on his way to the interim title, a first-round knockout at the hands of Michael Johnson, but seemed to improve following that fight, taking out the likes of Justin Gaethje, Eddie Alvarez, and Max Holloway.
Poirier’s continual improvement over the years has been impressive, and should he win against Charles Oliveira, it will represent the culmination of four years’ hard work.
Poirier is reluctant to spend a while at the top, amassing title defenses. Instead, he might just retire. When asked what to do in the event that he defeats Oliveira, Poirier said:
“We’ll see, man. I’ll probably just go and sell hot sauce.” Would you want to see Dustin Poirier defend the title, or should he make room for a new generation of fighters once he reaches the top? Let us know in the comments.
