Jake Paul will take on former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley in a boxing match in only a few hours.
Woodley represents Paul’s toughest competition yet. Paul’s boxing record features a fellow social media star, a basketball player, wrestler (and possibly the UFC’s worst striker) Ben Askren. Tyron Woodley’s mixed martial arts style was firmly rooted in wrestling, too, but Woodley had a reputation for powerful knockouts.
Jake Paul vs Tyron Woodley Results
If Jake Paul wins, he remains undefeated, albeit against a slew of non-boxers. If Tyron Woodley wins, it may herald a new career in boxing for the 40-year-old former champ.
Jake Paul is clearly padding his resume with non-boxers in the long-standing tradition of “tomato cans”. While this strategy might seem like a great way to whet his fans’ appetite for a genuine fight when the day comes, should Jake Paul lose to Tyron Woodley it will greatly affect his pulling power in the fight game.
RESULTS
Jake Paul wins via split decision. Jake Paul refused to touch gloves with Woodlye at the start of the fight.
Paul controlled the fight in the early rounds, taking full advantage of his reach to keep Woodley at bay. He found some early success by alternating between head and body shots, but failed to land any punches with serious power.
Woodley, as in his last four MMA bouts, failed to effectively control the bout. Although Woodley stalked Paul throughout the fight, maintaining composure and occasionally landing his famous right hand, it wasn’t enough to secure a knockout, or even to convince the judges.
Paul spent the final rounds of the fight sucking in air through his mouth, throwing increasingly erratic punches and relying on the clinch to keep Woodley at bay. However, Tyron never managed to piece together enough punches to pose a serious threat to Paul’s success.
Woodley, in his boxing debut, was by far Jake Paul’s most troublesome opponent. Whether Paul is good enough to fight an actual boxer remains to be seen, but it’s clear that the “problem child” is going nowhere.
