Kevin Lee took to social media to discuss his decision loss to Daniel Rodriguez at UFC Vegas 35. On Instagram, Lee discussed his improvement, aspirations for the future, promised that his best was yet to come, and dedicated a message to all his haters.
“Didn’t have a good performance this last time out but honestly after 500 days away and multiple surgeries I’m proud of what I was able to do.
Kevin Lee on Loss to Rodriguez: “If you have something negative to say f**k you”!
I tried climbing a very tall mountain and this was just another speed-bump on the way. My best performances are ahead of me and I know that. I don’t care if I have to bump my head to get there I won’t stop until I figure this shit out.
I’m still competing with the best in the world and won’t hang my head just yet. If you have something negative to say f**k you from bottom of my heart. F**k all the hate yall can burn in hell. And thank you to everyone who has reached out with love. I’m not done yet. Not at all.
After months of speculation, Lee’s arrival at welterweight was heralded as a new beginning for the UFC veteran. Daniel Rodriguez’s striking and formidable gas tank proved to be too much for Lee, and Rodriguez earned a decision win. Kevin Lee’s wrestling looked promising early in the fight, but ultimately it wasn’t enough for him to take the W.
Kevin Lee might believe his future is bright, but the UFC may well disagree. Kevin Lee sits on a two-fight losing streak. He has never won a fight in the UFC’s welterweight division. He has won just two of his last seven fights. While that record is particularly unflattering, it’s worth noting that, at lightweight, these losses included the likes of now-champion Charles Oliveira, Rafael dos Anjos, and Tony Ferguson.
Lee struggled to make weight toward the end of his time at 155 pounds, including in his fight against Oliveira. Lee’s return to welterweight was initially mean to take place against Sean Brady in July, but Lee sustained an injury that prevented him from fighting. Brady suffered an infected foot ahead of this fight, leading Rodriguez to step in as replacement.
Kevin Lee’s optimism about his future is admirable, but he will need to ensure that his next fight is one of the best of his career if he wants to maintain his UFC trajectory.
