Kelvin Gastelum is set to take on Jared Cannonier at UFC Vegas 34 later this month, but Sean Strickland doesn’t like his chances. Strickland was not shy in sharing his opinion on Gastelum, calling the fighter lazy and a “b*tch”.
Talking to James Lynch, Strickland shared his prediction for the UFC Vegas 34 main event. “Kelvin is such a lazy f*ck. To have somebody with so much potential but to be just such a lazy motherf*cker…
Strickland TRASHES “lazy f*ck” Gastelum
It depends. If Kelvin is not being a little f*cking bitch and he’s training hard and he’s hitting the gym, he’s working, if he’s not going wandering over f*cking Brazil making friends, then Kelvin has a legitimate shot.
But if Kelvin is being a lazy f*ck and going all over the world taking pictures of people, then he’s gonna have a bad night.”
Gastelum’s last fight was a decidedly one-sided showing. He lost a unanimous decision to Australian former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker, who is on the warpath to take on Israel Adesanya once again. Kelvin Gastelum’s record of late has been patchy, failing to secure back-to-back wins since 2018.
He’s won only one fight since 2018, against Ian Heinisch. Sean Strickland may well be on the money when he says Gastelum isn’t working hard enough to maintain his place in the division. With so many talented fighters crowding middleweight, perhaps Gastelum needs to make way for the next generation.
He once fought for the interim middleweight title, but right now he just needs to win to stay relevant.
Gastelum is ranked no.9 in the middleweight division, and will be looking to secure a win over a higher-ranked opponent to maintain his spot in the division’s top ten. Jared Cannonier is no.3 at middleweight, although he, like Gastelum, is fresh off a loss at the hands of Robert “Bobby Knuckles” Whittaker.
Sean Strickland, at no.8, will be watching the fight keenly, as its result may well have implications for his own future in the division. He’ll want a higher-ranked opponent next, perhaps even working his way up to challenge Israel Adesanya for the middleweight strap.
Before any of that can happen, however, Kelvin Gastelum will fight Jared Cannonier. Will Gastelum slow his slide and take Cannonier out, or will the higher-ranked fighter show Kelvin Gastelum the door out of the top 10? Let us know in the comments.
