Throughout his career, Bret Hart gave us everything he had in great match after great match, and on This Day in Wrestling History he recorded his final WWE World Championship against another legend.
There was something special about the talent level in the WWE in the mid to late 90s as it was a transitional period from the WWE being the land of the giants to the Attitude Era.
While Hart has managed to alienate some fans for his thoughts on the happenings of the day, but it doesn’t take away from him being one of the best ever and he faced the best ever.
On August 3, 1997, he faced the Undertaker at SummerSlam for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship with Shawn Michaels as the guest referee.
Frenemies
Hart and Michaels’ relationship has been well documented over the years as they went from being friends, to enemies, and finally back to friends.
In the process, they gave us some of the best matches and moments in wrestling history, including the Montreal Screwjob.
Before the infamous moment in Montreal, they had another memorable moment Hart recounted in his boot, Hitman, and we want to thank @awrestlinghistorian for the excerpt.
“We had words, with me finally shouting, ‘Fuck you!’ Our finish needed perfect timing. I had to spit right on cue, but I was exhausted, my throat coated from working so hard. I hacked out an extremely large, milky-white slobber-knocker. It flew out of my mouth and hit Shawn on the chest, where it flew up to splatter him right between the eyes. He came at me furiously with the chair. I ducked at the last second and heard a smash and a huge pop from the crowd as Taker crashed to the mat. I waved Shawn over to do the count, which he did with spit dangling from his nose. Then he stormed back to the dressing room. I was sure he’d thought I did it on purpose.
“Draped in a Canadian flag, with my music playing, I kissed the gold buckle of the belt, then dropped to my knees clutching the belt to my chest. I was aching all over, like one giant, throbbing bruise. When I came through the curtain I apologized to Shawn, explaining that I couldn’t help the size of the gob and that it was an accident. He just thanked me for the match, and before either of us realized it we shook hands, for the first time in a long time.
“I hunched over like someone had beaten me with a stick to untie my boots. I’d pulled my groin badly and I felt like I’d been impaled. Blade, in a long Hitman T-shirt, helped peel my pink wrist tape off and followed me everywhere with the WWF World Heavyweight belt draped over his shoulder and his ball cap on backward. I loved those moments.” – Bret Hart, Hitman book.
Often, creative or personal tension cam make or break an endeavor, for them it worked this night and it was a This Day in Wrestling moment we’ll never forget.
