NXT Takeover 36 might be the last of its kind, as NXT is set to undergo some potentially massive changes. On Friday night, we saw a large amount of talent from the NXT roster cut, and that is potentially only the start. Vince McMahon himself has been calling for a change to WWE’s developmental system, potentially ending the vision of Triple H.
WWE NXT Is Entering A New Era
This news was first reported by Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, who got some insight on what could be next for the NXT brand. Friday’s cuts were not picked by Triple H, but rather Vince McMahon, John Laurenaitis & Bruce Prichard. After losing the ‘Wednesday Night Wars’ to AEW Dynamite, WWE wants to move back to their old style of developmental. This will mean a focus on bigger guys and younger guys.
NXT is likely going back pretty far, before fighting AEW or trying to out-do the indies. Meltzer was given some exact wording, which he would share on the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. “No more midgets. No one starting in their 30s. They want people who can be box office attractions and main characters.” There will always be exceptions to this, with names like Pete Dunne & Adam Cole standing out, but this is overall bad news for the NXT roster.
Major Changes Ahead
This is going to be a major change for the fans of NXT, who have gotten used to the fast paced product. However, things with NXT haven’t been ideal ever since they went head to head with AEW. The forced changes haven’t worked, and some talent sticking around far past their time haven’t helped the situation. However it’s not hard to tell why talent like Johnny Gargano, Tomasso Ciampa and The Undisputed Era wanted to stick to NXT, seeing how their peers who got called up were treated.
NXT was almost viewed as an alternative to WWE within WWE by some, and that might no longer be the case by the end of this year. We can potentially see a bit of the new vision in the NXT Breakout tournament, with names like Duke Hudson & Odyssey Jones likely being the types WWE is looking for. This will likely lead to more roster cuts. We could also potentially some push back internally from Triple H.
