We keep hearing how AEW isn’t the WWE’s competition, yet since AEW started the WWE has made moves that looked like they were trying to counter them, and Brock Lesnar’s return fits into that mold.
AEW has grown into a serious threat to the WWE while not operating under the pretext of actually challenging the Disney of professional wrestling.
Sure, they’ve signed numerous former WWE talent, but given the WWE has spent years scooping up any and all talent they could makes it difficult to find someone that wasn’t with the WWE at some point.
This is the story with their newest signing, CM Punk.
Glorious return
Since he walked away from wrestling years ago, fans have never stopped trying to convince Punk to return to the squared circle.
While the reasons he didn’t return were bantered about by fans, it appears he was looking for the perfect place and group of people and he found that in AEW.
We’ve said previously that AEW is a wrestling company fun mostly by wrestlers, for wrestlers. They care about what the fans want and don’t turn a deaf ear because one person wants something else.
And their product has improved over the last few months as they’ve found their comfort zone.
CM Punk appearing on AEW Rampage last week and then on Dynamite this week were two of the top moments in a long time and the buzz could be felt and heard everywhere.
So, what does the WWE do to combat this?
Return of the Beast Incarnate
For months we’ve heard how Brock Lesnar wasn’t going to return to the WWE anytime soon, and that no deal was in the works.
Well, he’s back and the narrative has shifted to him being brought back earlier than he was originally going to.
It’s been reported that Lesnar was meant to come back to face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania in 2022, meaning a possible two to three years with Reigns as Universal Championship.
So, if Lesnar returned a year earlier than he was supposed to, it gives a decent argument to him coming back to counter CM Punk’s signing with AEW.
The WWE’s practice to fix their problems the last few years is to bring back their legends to get a ratings bump, and it looks like that’s another possibility here.
Add to that how several WWE personalities have been less than gentle when talking about Punk’s contributions to wrestling while fans are super stoked also adds weight to him being why Lesnar came back.
What do you think? Was Lesnar brought back to counter Punk and will it succeed? Let us know in the comments below.
