There’s been plenty of speculation about whether or not the WWE is for sale, and the rumors have been given a new lease on life as Bray Wyatt’s release is being taken as a red flag.
Over the last two years, Wyatt has established himself as the top fan favorite with his latest creative creation as a Mr. Rogers type that turns into the Fiend persona when he needs more muscle.
He was so over anytime someone gained the upper hand on him, fans’ boos even drowned out the public address system.
Of course, the WWE didn’t know how to book him and another awesome gimmick was wasted. There were reports from 2019 where Wyatt reportedly told a reporter that he knew his character would be ruined.
He allegedly said the writers understood what he wanted to do, but Vince McMahon didn’t.
But bad booking isn’t anything new and it can be corrected. Releasing the top star due to budget reasons can’t be. At least, not easily as bridges may have been burned beyond repair.
What does Wyatt’s release mean?
In the grand scheme of things, in my not amount to much, but this is where selling the WWE rumors come into play.
We’ve seen it time and again when one business sells, whether it’s a typical business that usually comes to mind or sports teams, it tries to make its bottom line look impressive.
People that make the larger salaries are often let go of given a pay cut, and younger, more energetic people often take their place.
The best way I can think of describing it is a professional football team may have all the best players, but if they lose constantly the ticket sales and merchandise sales are bad.
This makes the team look less marketable and that their finances are a mess. Hence, by cutting the larger salaries and even some of the best talent through trades, restructuring deals, or releases helps improve the optics of their profit margin.
It makes the company look more profitable and a better buy.
While releasing top talent like Wyatt seems like it would damage the company, at the end of the day it’s important to remember rarely is anyone considered indispensable to the bosses.
Whether it’s a 9-5 job, a pro athlete, or wrestler, the mentality is to get the most out of then while it’s possible and move on. It sucks, but it’s typically what happens in business.
Does this mean the WWE is planning to sell? No, but it’s definitely a hefty piece of evidence that it could be coming.
Is there a bigger red flag than when a company releases their most popular talent for budget reasons?
