Over the past year, one of the best names in all of WWE has been Finn Balor. His second run through NXT as NXT Champion was one of the best the belt had ever seen, with Balor truly giving his all in every single match – even getting the best two matches we’ve ever seen out of Karrion Kross. However, he’s since moved on and went back to Smackdown Live, where he will soon clash with Roman Reigns. Balor wanted to take a different route though, one that could have elevated NXT UK.
Finn Balor Pitched A Move To NXT UK
In an interview with BT Sports, the home of WWE in the United Kingdom, Finn Balor would reveal that Smackdown Live wasn’t his first choice of a next step. He had wanted to go to NXT UK, as heard in the following quote. “Before I returned to SmackDown, I could feel the run at NXT coming to an end, I pitched the idea of moving to NXT UK. I feel like I could challenge myself, but also help the brand like I helped NXT.”
Undoubtedly, Finn Balor being on NXT UK would have helped to make the show something that would be must see. Despite having the best wrestling that you will see on WWE programming every week, and one of the most well-rounded rosters, NXT UK simply doesn’t have any big names like Balor to bring viewers in. While hardcore fans will tune in for names like Meiko Satomura & WALTER, they aren’t bringing in the average WWE fan like Balor could.
This Could Still Happen
All hope isn’t lost however. Finn Balor has shown no signs of slowing down in WWE, despite recently turning 40 years old. His stay on Smackdown Live could be a short one, as it seems like the only plans for him involved showing up to face old rival and current WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns. That match comes this week on Smackdown Live, and could lead into a PPV match for Extreme Rules. Reigns is expected to win both matches.
If WWE wants NXT UK to be a successful brand, names like Balor will be needed. They could also have Davey Boy Smith Jr. heading that way, seeing as he hasn’t shown up since his one dark match, despite signing with the company. NXT UK could become the focus on Triple H due to Vince McMahon taking the reigns on NXT in the United States, which could lead to some interesting moves.
