Former WWE and current AEW referee Mike Chioda has been making the podcast rounds and he’s been sharing some pretty cool WWE stories, like John Cena getting the WWE fined by MSG.
Throughout sports and entertainment, there’s a special bond between the athletes and performers when it comes to certain venues.
Whether the fans are super awesome, most of their best moments have been there, or there’s a cumulative history at the venue that’s synonymous with the company’s success.
But even a glorious past and relationship doesn’t mean there won’t be repercussions if someone pushes or breaks the rules in place, and according to Chioda Cena pushed and the WWE paid for it.
Multiple times, according to Chioda.
Going over
John Cena is a superstar and has made millions of dollars for the WWE over his 20 year career, so there’s some leeway that can be given to him occasionally.
Maybe that was why he pushed the boundaries on the curfew set by Madison Square Garden for the WWE’s shows there.
As reported on tjrwrestling.net, Chioda was on the Monday Mailbag podcast on AdFreeShows when he recounted a couple of those occasions.
Chioda was asked about Madison Square Garden’s strict curfew, and he said breaking the curfew never sat well with Vince McMahon, but Cena didn’t want to stop things when he got moving.
“The reaction is hot from Vince. John Cena has done it a couple of times, I know. But John didn’t care man, he liked to get his stuff in. Just do what he does and entertain the crowd. It’s always amazing when you work with Cena too, half the crowd is saying ‘Cena sucks!’ and he had all the kids going ‘Let’s go Cena!’ when Cena’s getting into a comeback. When Cena’s getting into a match he didn’t care. It’s a very high price at Madison Square Garden.”
Chioda then explained the penalty was pretty hefty.
“When the guys used to run over time at the Garden, at curfew I know it used to cost like, anywhere between $50,000 and $100,000. It wasn’t cheap. It wasn’t like a $5000, $10,000 fine.
“If you’re running The Garden, and you’ve got a full house, you’ve got a million dollar gate. It wasn’t a cheap price to go over the curfew at The Garden because that union stuff was strict there.”
Insights like this are always fun and give us a different side of the sport we’re not used to seeing, and it’s cool that Cena wants to ensure fans get the full experience even if it might’ve landed him in hot water.
