Wrestling fans and talent alike are all still mourning the tragic passing of WCW & Impact Wrestling legend Daffney. She tragically took her life on September 1st, at only 46 years old. While she carved out a unique legacy in professional wrestling as one of the few female WCW Cruiserweight Champions and making David Flair interesting – she never made it to WWE, though Chris Jericho certainly tried.
Daffney Would Have Fit Into To The Ruthless Aggression Divas Era Like A Glove
After the ill-fated Invasion Storyline; Chris Jericho had tried to convince WWE to hire Daffney for their women’s division. This would have put her among names like Lita, Trish Stratus, Molly Holly, Torrie Wilson and Victoria during the start of the Ruthless Aggression era. While she wasn’t much of a worker in WCW, she was always entertaining and got a lot of screen time in top level angles.
She would have fit in well, and brought something different aesthetic wise to the table. We could have had an anti-diva character in a time when it would have worked wonders! Her time in Impact Wrestling showed more great character work and improvements in the ring, which we would have seen in WWE as well. Despite all this, WWE wouldn’t have anything to do with Daffney, and it was for a fairly stupid reason.
WWE Didn’t Like Her Screaming Gimmick From WCW
As told by Lance Storm on the Figure Four Daily podcast with Bryan Alvarez, Jericho had really pushed to get Daffney into WWE. However, he was told by whoever the idea was pitched to that they didn’t need someone like her. Jericho was told ‘Yea, we really don’t like that screaming thing.’ which was in reference to her WCW gimmick. Jericho would respond with “Well then tell her not to scream. It’s like she doesn’t have to scream. It’s not the only thing she knows how to do.”
WWE passed up on a talent who could have really stood out and who was incredibly creative – all because they didn’t like one part of her past gimmick. If that doesn’t say alot about WWE at the time, and perhaps overall? I don’t know what does.
