This past week on the reboot of NXT, aptly named NXT 2.0 – there were a lot of fresh faces in the mix. From the sons of Rick Steiner and Bull Buchanan to a new female member in Diamond Mine, there was one that stood out, atleast to those backstage. Von Wagner would help Kyle O’Reilly fend off an attack from Pete Dunne & Ridge Holland, before taking his spot in the Fatal Four Way main event. Wagner didn’t become the NXT Champion in his debut match on NXT 2.0, but it won’t be his last main event.
Von Wagner Has Been Compared To A Young Edge
Eagle eyed viewers will notice that this was Cal Bloom, who previously appeared during the Thunderdome era of WWE. The son of Beau Beverly, this second generation wrestler has been a favorite for a while now. He proved in this massive main event that he could hang with the likes of Pete Dunne & Tommaso Ciampa, though he had issues standing out despite his height.
This is something WWE isn’t too concerned about. They hope to mold Wagner into a Wrestlemania main eventer, and have for a while. Back when he first showed up on WWE programming, there were backstage reports comparing him to a young Edge, who is of course one of the biggest stars WWE ever produced.
Vince McMahon Is All In On Wagner
He’s got the full backing of Vince McMahon himself, and we can expect him to be a focal star of NXT 2.0 alongside Bron Breakker. If WWE can get Wagner to show some more charisma in the ring and have him carry himself like a star, there will be very little stopping him. He’s got the size, the legacy, the skills, and just needs to put it all together.
WWE is looking to use NXT 2.0 to build people who can main event Wrestlemania. Von Wagner in four or five years could be exactly that, something which WWE can use to tout the success of this NXT reboot. They might not get instant results, but the long-con is what is important.
