This day in wrestling history has a interesting side tidbit and that’s some real life animosity adding fuel to the fire for a feud and championship match.
It’s nothing new, as professional wrestling has long used real life relationships and incidents to weave fun stories for us, but this one was slightly different considering Bill Goldberg was a WCW guy coming in.
Add to that how he and Triple H had real life heat, according to PWTorch as shared by @awrestlinghistorian, after Triple H talked smack about him in 2000 on Mancow’s Madhouse In The Morning radio show.
It was also reported that Goldberg wanted to really fight Triple H when they met at a licensing convention they were both at, but it would have to wait until they stepped into a WWE Ring.

Coming to a head
On September 21, 2003, Bill Goldberg and Triple H faced each other at Unforgiven for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
As seems to be the case more times than not, there was some concern over backstage politics since Triple H was working in the office at that point, but we’ll let Goldberg explain it.
Special thanks to @awrestlinghistorian for the transcript.
“I was the enemy and I came in. Here are all these guys that I’ve been saying bad things about and trying to beat, kick their ass, move for move, segment for segment, and now I’m one of them? Boy, this is going to go over well.
“Oh, and by the way, Hunter and I didn’t get along to begin with! Things were said from afar and now I’m there and he’s part of the office. Oh, shit! Talk about putting myself on an island. I didn’t do anything, but make it worse in the beginning. But it’s tough because people can’t empathize with you unless they’ve been in your situation. And as great as a situation is or was, I was still at the mercy of the next person who was giving me advice.” – Bill Goldberg, Broken Skull Sessions interview December 2, 2019.
As we’ve seen since then, Goldberg went on to win and have a mixed WWE career for various reasons.
He was a lightning storm in a bottle for WCW, and he never fully managed to expand on that in the WWE.
None of that takes away from his accomplishments and the fact that on this day in wrestling history he opened a new chapter speaks more to his ability and desire to push through than anything else.
