With Samoa Joe having to give up the NXT Championship due to injury, the planned Fatal Four Way for a shot at him has higher stakes. The winner will now become the NXT Champion. LA Knight has never had a chance like this before. Kyle O’Reilly has come close against Finn Balor & Karrion Kross. Pete Dunne is one of the longest reigning champions of the modern era. Tommaso Ciampa has been looking to regain the NXT Champion for years now – since he had to vacate back in 2019. However, this match would be changed when Dunne took O’Reilly out, putting the newcomer Von Wagner into the mix.
Von Wagner Proves He Belongs
Wagner would tower over his competition, but the combined wrestling experience of the rest likely is more than his life experience. He’d shove Ciampa away before getting rolled up by Knight. Wagner took a DDT from Knight, before Ciampa took a powerslam. Knight was fired up as Bron Breakker got a win over him in the opening.
Wagner would get his fingers snapped by Dunne, and Ciampa would dodge an elbow stomp before nailing some hammer blows. Ciampa would run wild after taking out Knight who saved Dunne, but Dunne took him down. Wagner hit a Clothesline From Hell, before an elevated flatliner on Knight. He was proving that he belongs – but it’ll take more than two nice moves.
908 Days Apart, Tommaso Ciampa Gets Goldy Back
Back from a break, Knight would have taken Wagner out on the outside using the steps and was working on Dunne & Ciampa. Ciampa would fight them into the corner and hit some running lariats, and Wagner was nearly caught with The Fairytale Ending but countered out. LA Knight would hit two Blunt Force Traumas, before being caught with Willows Bell. Dunne pulled Knight to the outside, saving the match. Ciampa hit a big dive, before Dunne caught him in the ring with a Bitter End.
Wagner sent Dunne outside and hit an Angle Slam on Knight, but only got a two count. Dunne & Ciampa worked together to take Wagner out with forearms, before slugging it out in the middle of the ring. Ciampa took a German Suplex, before Dunne went for a moonsault onto him outside. Knight hit a Superplex, but Wagner hit the sitout double underhook, before Ciampa hit Fairytale Ending for the win.
Everyone played their roles well in this match, even the promising Von Wagner. However Ciampa was the best pick, and someone who can have a great match with anyone on this rising roster. It was too short to be better than good, but served it’s purpose well. Match Rating: 3.5/5 (*** 1/2)
