Luck does not appear to on the WWE’s side lately, and it’s continued to the new NXT rebranding promo being shown and soundly booed at last week’s Super Smackdown at Madison Square Garden.
MSG is as big a safe place for the WWE as anywhere and it’s been used at a litmus test for new ideas through their working relationship.
So, debuting the new NXT logo following a bunch of releases and rebranding seemed like a good idea, right?
Nope.
In fact, according to reports it sounds like the promo was soundly booed by a record setting crowd, and that may not bode well for the WWE’s developmental brand.
Not in favor
Fans have disliked the rebranding attempt since it was announced, and dislike may be too weak a work.
While the company wants to focus on creating their own home grown talent, which could lead to the WWE owning their names and anything else they do that would make moving on difficult, it resulted is fan favorites being released.
And of other reports are true, Triple H and Shawn Michaels weren’t in on the releases until they happened or afterwards.
And given it was the better of the three brands in many fans and critics’ eyes doesn’t sit well.
And not that it’s been announced that Vince McMahon and Bruce Prichard will be producing NXT as well (Prichard Executive Produces Raw and Smackdown), many expect the same we’ve come to expect on those shows.
Now that Samoa Joe has relinquished the NXT Championship, it’s brought up questions as to whether it’s a legitimate injury or part of the storyline to pass it on to a younger talent, which would fit the rebranding idea.
Since Joe was expected on WWE Raw on 9/13 and that’s been called off could be another indicator. Or his injury could be a legitimate one that’s proven to be coincidental for the rebranding effort.
Skeleton crew
As if the show needed more bad news, it was also reported by bodyslam.net that another rash of releases came and this time it decimated the production crew and allegedly leaving them with a skeleton crew.
There are a couple ways to take this if true, and one is they did what they were paid to do and then were let go, and the other is it’s along the rebranding plan and NXT is going to be extremely downsized.
