Fingers faster than a speeding bullet. Expletives like a locomotive. Able to compliment heavyweights and diss his rivals in a single Tweet. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Conor McGregor’s Twitter account.
McGregor was quick to jump on Twitter and shower Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury with praise following their trilogy fight yesterday, declaring it “a great heavyweight trilogy” and announcing his “respect” for the pair. Of course, Conor McGregor being Conor McGregor, he couldn’t resist taking a sly verbal jab at perennial rival Dustin Poirier.
McGregor Lauds Wilder v Fury 3, Slams Poirier &; Family
“Great fight that. Both warriors, both winners. Hard to not be impressed with Deontay there. Against the much larger man and almost got it done. Great fight. 40lb’s in weight difference is A LOT. Fair play both men there, very enjoyable fights they have had together. Respect.”
In his next Tweet, McGregor made a sly reference to his own trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier, in which he broke his leg. McGregor is still recovering from the leg break, and is tending to his grudge against Dustin Poirier as well as he is to that shattered shin.
“Their skill levels are unique but very close. A great heavyweight trilogy that was. I love when it gets set for certain and both have an honorable showing. Not the fam in the ring fake celebrating after a freak injury etc etc you know the gig, God bless the real in this world.”
McGregor also addressed Wilder and Fury’s families.
“Congrats Tyson and Paris. Me and Dee are so happy for you and the kids. Congrats Deontay and Telli also. Was great meeting you guys recently. A real proud showing that was, and could have went either way. Amazing! Happy Sunday now today with the cheddar and the memory’s God bless”
McGregor is clearly taking issue with the manner in which Dustin Poirier celebrated his trilogy win. Poirier was declared the winner of their fight via TKO, while Conor McGregor screamed from the ground that it was a doctor’s stoppage.
It’s probable that Conor’s allusions to “both warriors, both winners” and how the boxing match “could have went either way” are also references to how he feels about his own trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier.
Conor McGregor is unlikely to fight again in 2021, although he is slated for a return to the UFC in 2022. Whether he does or not is another story, as the Irishman may simply choose to focus on his other business interests, such as whiskey, rather than attempting to correct his recent losing streak.
