It’s been a while since Epico & Primo were released from WWE. The Puerto Rican tag team had some success in the company, but were often stuck at the bottom of the card with bad gimmicks. From being BullFighters to Time Share Salesmen, they’ve taken what they’re given and try to give their best in the ring. However, there was one gimmick that they wouldn’t get to take to TV – and it was pitched by Vince McMahon himself.
Vince McMahon Wanted Epico & Primo As Puerto Rican Playboys
While speaking on That 90’s Wrestling Podcast, Epico would talk about this pitched gimmick from Vince McMahon in WWE.
“One of the many times we got heat, they came up with this gimmick. We were supposed to be the Puerto Rican Playboys. We’re in the office and Vince goes, ‘Yeah you guys are good-looking. You’re Puerto Rican, I want you guys to dress like Hugh Hefner.’ It was like a mix of Hugh Hefner and Goldust. ‘You’re gonna wear black and gold.’ Me and Primo looked, we almost threw up right there. ‘Here’s your gimmick,’ they had gear and everything. We had the black and gold robe like Hugh Hefner. And we were gonna be in Goldust’s color scheme.”
Plans Changed Just Two Hours Before Showtime
Vince McMahon eventually realized that this gimmick wouldn’t quite work for TV, and just two hours before it was supposed to debut on TV. The gear was made, they were ready to give their best, when it was pulled. After this, they would come up with the Shining Stars gimmick instead. That gimmick got them nowhere, and barely got TV time after the first few months.
These were two elite level technical wrestlers. Whenever they got a chance to shine in the ring, they took it and ran. They’d be trusted to bust out moves like vertical drop brainbusters, yet saddled with some of the worst gimmicks WWE had to offer. Their shining moment was arguably being part of WeeLC as Los Matadores.
