Khamzat Chimaev anticipates terrifying the rest of the UFC’s welterweights with his performance this weekend. Ahead of his fight against Li Jingliang, he told the press at the UFC 267 media day that he’ll be looking for a finish, and a way to the welterweight title.
“I don’t think these guys want to fight with me after this fight. They’re gonna start to be scared again, complain ‘he didn’t fight some of these good guys, blah blah blah,’ things like that. We will see what happens after this fight.”
Khamzat Chimaev Expects to Strike Fear Into the Welterweight Division
Chimaev is hoping to fight Leon Edwards in the near future. However, with the Englishman on a lengthy win streak, Chimaev may not get his wish until he himself is challenging for the title. “Of course, I will be happy if they give me somebody like [Edwards].
But I think if he wins this fight he’s supposed to fight for the title. How many win streak now? 10, 9? I respect that. I win this fight, win also one, two, three fights more before the title. I don’t want to jump up [past] the guys and have people talk like, ‘This is disrespect,’ I don’t like this talk.
I want to show who I am. I’m gonna beat all the guys in the top 10, 10 fighters, and I’m gonna become champion.”
Khamzat Chimaev’s impressive appetite for fighting, which saw him enter the Octagon twice in ten days last year, has rarely been whetted in the past year. He looks forward to taking on Li Jingliang, and despite Jingliang’s no. 11 ranking in the welterweight division, is not worried about the Chinese fighter’s impressive finishing rate.
When asked if he sees Jingliang as his toughest challenge yet, Khamzat Chimaev’s reply was simple. “I don’t think so.
Last time I fight Gerald Meerschaert, they say, ‘He owns the most submissions in the game,’ always people going to talk that somebody is better than me. I know who I am.
I’m gonna go take his head.”
When Chimaev faced Meerschaert, he win the fight in seventeen seconds thanks to a vicious knockout. He may well repeat the feat this weekend against Li Jingliang, who is himself known as a knockout specialist. If Chimaev hopes to challenge for the title, he’ll need to keep proving himself against progressively tougher opponents.
