When Bellator president Scott Coker proclaimed the Bellator light heavyweight Corey Anderson, nobody was more surprised than Jan Blachowicz. Blachowicz, the UFC’s light heavyweight champ, took to Twitter to voice his incredulous response.
“Hold up… So a guy who bolted from the UFC after I’ve slept him and almost made him retire, got a couple of wins in the 2nd league and claims he is the best? Maybe I’ve punched him to hard… No class in win or defeat Corey. There’s levels to this.
Jan Blachowicz Fires Back at Corey Anderson’s “Greatest Light Heavyweight” Claim
Jan Blachowicz fought Corey Anderson twice during the latter’s time in the UFC. The first time, Blachowicz lost a decision to Anderson, but the second time around he delivered a brutal first-round knockout.
The second fight was arguably the more memorable one, a title eliminator for then-champ Jon Jones. Jan Blachowicz went on to win Jones’ vacant belt via TKO victory, while Corey Anderson moved on to Bellator almost immediately.
That’s not quite how Anderson remembers it, as he told MMA Junkie. “I already know I’m the best light heavyweight in the world.
I already know Jan (Blachowicz) was a hiccup of mine in my own shield. I’m not going to say I underestimated him, but I looked past him. I was thinking, ‘I whooped the shit out of this dude once and I’m going to do it again.’ But I shouldn’t have. I should have taken it one fight at a time.”
Corey Anderson continued this train of thought on Twitter. “ Let’s not forget. What happened to you the 1st time I left you looking like elephant man. And you posted “I need to go home and rethink my career”.
Yea I got knocked out in our 2nd fight (lucky punch?) but I made you my broad for 15 min straight nothing lucky about that.”
Of course, since the two faced off in February 2020, Jan Blachowicz won, and defended, the light heavyweight title. He even handed Israel Adesanya his first mixed martial arts defeat when the middleweight champion attempted to move up to 205 pounds and take Blachowicz’s belt.
Most commentators and fights fans would probably argue that, based on recent performances, Jan Blachowicz is probably the superior fighter, but only a third fight would truly settle the score.
Although it’s unlikely that we’ll ever see a Blachowicz vs Anderson trilogy as both men fight in different promotions, at a time when even Tyron Woodley is boxing YouTubers it’s far from impossible. Maybe this could be the cross-promotional superfight that Scott Coker has wanted for so long.
