After UFC fighter Luis Pena, also known as “Violent Bob Ross”, was arrested for the second time this year, Dana White said he’d had enough. Pena has been released from his UFC contract.
Pena was arrested only days ago on charges of domestic violence, only a few months after he was arrested for a combination of robbery, battery, and criminal mischief. Pena has yet to face court but the UFC dismissed him with haste.
UFC Releases Luis Pena, Dana Ponders Doing the Same to Jon Jones
Dana White discussed the issue in a recent press conference, saying it “had to happen”. “This was a bad case [Luis Pena] and we knew he had problems before that we were trying to help him with, but this is a pretty nasty one. I don’t know if you guys read the police report but yeah, this one had to happen.”
Of course, the elephant in the room is Jon “Bones” Jones and his arrest a few weeks back on similar charges. Jon Jones was arrested on domestic violence charges following his induction to the UFC Hall of Fame, a situation sadly emblematic of his career in the UFC.
This is only the most recent of Jon Jones’ arrests, with prior convictions for driving while intoxicated, and a hit-and-run conviction in which he left a pregnant woman injured at the scene of the crime. Jones returned to the crash site to retrieve a pile of cash from his vehicle.
With Luis Pena released from his contract on domestic violence charges, the press were curious to see what Dana White would do about the Jon Jones issue. Dana White was vague in his response.
“Something like that [a release] could happen to anybody, yeah. Could happen to anybody.” With Jon Jones’ charges arguably more serious than Luis Pena’s, there’s a case to be made that he ought to be punished by the UFC. At the time of the hit-and-run conviction, Jones was stripped of his light heavyweight title and suspended from competition.
As it stands, the UFC has taken no punitive action against Jon Jones for his most recent arrest. It’s unclear what action they could take at this stage, considering that Jon Jones vacated his title after winning it back, and has been inactive for years pursuing a move up to the heavyweight division.
Jon Jones claims that he will quit drinking and come back better than ever, but only time will tell. He may face serious prison time if he is convicted of this crime.
