Jerry Lawler made a name for himself as an announcer during the WWE’s Attitude Era as he perfectly complimented Jim Ross’ down home and personable style perfectly.
Lawler didn’t mind pushing the boundaries either as he became the lovable type of commentator that always had a one liner at the ready and could zing the best of them.
Over the years, he was moved to the side as the WWE tried new combinations of announcers but haven’t reached the levels of the Attitude Era or prior.
Out of sight, but not out of mind
For that reason, Jerry Lawler was reported to be put back on Raw to help develop the younger commentators, but he soon disappeared from our TV screens.
It was rumored and reported that he didn’t want to do commentary and it was only a temporary position, so it made sense that he left.
But according to @the_wrestling_news2 he talked about why he was taken off the announce team with K & S Wrestlefest.
He said he thinks he was removed due to a comment he made during one of Akira Tozawa’s matches. Special thanks to @the_wrestling_news2 for the following quote.
“And so the next thing, he goes to the top of the rope and he flies off and I looked at Byron and I said ‘Oh look, there’s a ramen noodle moonsault.’ What is racist about that? I thought it was funny. That’s a ridiculous name, right? And all of a sudden, the internet blows up. ‘Oh, King’s a racist.’ Even Tozawa, the next week comes back and says, ‘It’s nothing racist. I eat ramen noodles every week.’ But the next week I wasn’t on RAW anymore. So I don’t know if that’s what happened but anyway, you got to be very careful.”
Funny or not?
This is the question that we all face at one point or another. It’s impossible not to offend someone at some point, and we have to be ready for what others think and be mindful of it.
Though the King’s comments may be funny to some, including the person they’re directed towards, others won’t agree and will speak their minds on it.
The WWE is hyper aware of fans’ thoughts on these issues, even if they ignore everything else, so he may have been removed to let the comments fade.
What do you think about what he said? Was the WWE right if they removed him from television because of this, or was it an instance of Cancel Culture striking? Let us know in the comments below.
