The Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch backstage argument has led to another chapter as Sonya Deville stepped in and reportedly wanted to legitimately fight Flair.
This is the type of thing that appears to have developed over Deville’s perceived lack of respect Flair showed to everyone by going off script and dropping the title to the mat when Lynch tried to snatch it to stay on script.
Deville then refused to hand the Raw belt to Lynch to possibly placate Flair diffuse and Lynch got pissed and threw the Smackdown belt at Flair.
According to pwinsider.com there’s been resentment toward Flair protecting her character growing for weeks.
She’s apparently been labeled as self-indulgent and protective toward herself, as many wrestlers have said is how it should be, and wants to make sure the light is on her.
They quoted someone close to her as saying, “Let’s be honest, that’s what stars do. They make sure their star power remains the same or greater.”
Obviously, she’s rubbing people the wrong way.
At the Gorilla Position
What better place for the top two women’s division stars to have a shouting match than in the Gorilla Position in front of Vince McMahon and Bruce Prichard?
That’s where Lynch and Flair’s altercation took place, and where Deville reportedly was so furious at Flair dropping the title on the mat and other things that she was ready to fight her.
As such, Flair was escorted out of the building, which can be taken as a show of disrespect to Flair. Since it’s generally done when they fear for the individual’s safety and to ensure they leave, it adds some weight to the disrespect angle.
It was the WWE’s way of diffusing the situation. But given how Flair reportedly has issues with Nia Jax a few weeks about and now the highly popular Lynch and Deville, it’s going to be interesting to see how the WWE handles this.
Further diffusing the situation
To go a step further and wipe any hint of the incident from collective memory by editing out Flair dropping the belt and Deville ordering her to pick it up.
Out of sight, out of mind.
What’s funny about this whole thing is Flair reportedly thought the planned segment with her handing her belt to Lynch so Lynch would have both would make her and her title reign look weak in comparison, and she’s not wrong.
Lynch reportedly felt Flair was disrespecting her by making the scene about her, and she’s not wrong.
And Deville allegedly took offense at the lack of respect Flair showed everyone and she’s not wrong. Though dropping a belt like Flair did is a heel thing to do and the ad-libbed entire segment fit Flair’s character.
