The WWE has always been about having larger than life stars, and it’s been reported by a couple of websites including whatculture.com that they’re implementing a new policy to help make their superstars looked bigger.
The story apparently originated with Dave Meltzer, and it’s been reported that the WWE will start hiring shorter referees in the future, and it’s hoped it’ll make their wrestlers look taller than they are.
This may be nothing more than speculation and we’re treating as that, but given the strange things the WWE has done in 2021, is it really that strange?
Finding what works
The WWE has tried various things to revitalize the company as it’s slogged through one of its worst stretches in their history.
The WWE also announced size parameters for future prospects in NXT 2.0, and this looks to go hand in hand with that.
Oddly enough, Johnathan Coachman went from being a backstage interviewer to a in ring performer due to him being as big as many of the wrestlers on the roster.
So there is a precedent for this type of thing and the WWE is all about the optics.
From its earliest days, Vince McMahon put most of his funding into the production quality of his videos and sent them across the country. The revenue that generated allowed him the ability to sign the top stars from the other companies.
Odd timing
It’s not really surprising that this news broke the day after VICE’s Dark Side of the Ring’s season 3 finale covered the steroid trial involving the WWE in the 1993.
This would be a healthy way to help their stars look bigger and with any luck the latest generation of fans won’t see most of their favorite pass away in a few years from heart attacks or drug overdoses.
Back in the 90s, the WWE switched to smaller, more athletic wrestlers like Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart.
But most of the roster are that size now, so something had to give for them to appear formidable and dangerous as opponents.
This isn’t the worst idea they’ve had, but we’ll have to wait to see if this change in optics can overcome the bad writing and storylines that have plagued the company for years.
If we miss a change, we’re sure the announcers will inform us how gigantic a wrestler that was previously 6’2”, but it’s part of the spectacle we’ve come to expect and what could it hurt?
