Colby Covington, never short of a few words, has already targeted his next opponent. Fresh off the back of his second loss to welterweight champ Kamaru Usman, Covington knows he needs to work his way back up to a title shot and potential trilogy fight. The first step on the way will be his former friend, roommate, and teammate Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal.
He announced this plan to the post-fight press conference at UFC 268. “I think the most logical step is the heated rivalry with me and my old roommate Street Judas Masvidal.
Colby Covington Calls Out Former Teammate Jorge Masvidal
He should probably pull out of that fight with Leon Scott [Leon Edwards] and we should just run it. Let’s run it in the first quarter of the first part of the year, and let’s do it, man. That’s a heated rivalry.”
Masvidal is scheduled to fight Leon Edwards at UFC 269, who Colby Covington mistakenly (or perhaps deliberately) referred to as “Leon Scott”.
“He talks so much sh*t in the media and said so many things about me. Look at what happened when he fought Marty [Kamaru Usman]. He got dusted. If he fought me, he would get dusted even worse and it wouldn’t be competitive. I just want to hold these people accountable for the way they run their mouth in the media, and it makes sense.
If he goes ahead with that Leon Scott fight, then Hunter Campbell, I just pray to you, please God, don’t cut him after that third loss in a row. Save him around and let me be the one that ends his career.”
Covington and Masvidal’s story reads like a Shakespeare drama. The former friends and training partners at American Top Team became bitter rivals when Masvidal entered the UFC welterweight division and quickly climbed the ranks.
Masvidal claims that their relationship reached breaking point when Colby “ripped off” a coach at ATT, while Covington has constantly labelled Masvidal “Street Judas” in the press.
The two exchange shots via the media and Twitter with some regularity, and Masvidal contributed to the canon of their rivalry recently.
Jorge Masvidal captioned a post “Gonna expose the fake real soon. Like father like son” with a photo of Colby Covington and Joe Biden.
Another Tweet featured the caption “The streets don’t belong to the fake”, while in yet another Masvidal made a bold prediction for 2022.
“2021-2022 prediction: Colby burns MMA master like he has every gym and every coach he ever had by not paying and talking shit on the way out. Rinse wash repeat”
Whatever happens, a fight between these bitter rivals is sure to result in fireworks. Do you want to see Masvidal vs Covington? Let us know in the comments.
