The Dwayne Johnson and Jack Black-led Jumanji revival spawned a film series with a big following in India. It’s gotten to the point that it looks Bollywood could see a debut by The Great One.
Dwayne Johnson Is Big in India
When speaking with Hindustan Times in October, The Rock showed his appreciation for his fans in India. He noted that some came from his time as a wrestler but he’s always loved the enthusiasm he got from fans in there—especially from Bollywood actors.
“A lot of times, (since they are) actors (they could be just) acting, but the love that I get from a lot of actors in India is genuine. I feel it, all the way, over here. I love the energy and the love from India has been unbelievable over the years. By the way, I was tracking this love when I was wrestling in WWE because wrestling is very big in India.”
In a recent press conference for Red Notice, he took a question from Hindustan Times about him potentially stepping into the Bollywood film scene.
“I have not been offered one in the past, but I would love that. And you know, I, as I would like, we talked about this the other day when there’s like two big cultures in terms of entertainment, it’s coming out of Bollywood and Hollywood. There should be more crossover. So, I think that would be really cool. Absolutely. And I’m well aware.”
Red Notice co-star and Wonder Woman lead Gal Gadot made sure to add “He can dance too and do everything easily.” Of course, The Rock was modest about it. I mean, he is rapping now as well.
Johnson’s success outside of the West isn’t surprising, it could be the specific places that really clamor for his films. Think of it in the same way that Bruce Lee, Chow Yun-Fat, and Jackie Chan all found a following in the U.S by starring in films in the Chinese movie industry or how Idris Elba really caught on in the States out after series of Luther became available outside of the UK.
Personally, I can see Dwayne Johnson being a big presence in Bollywood’s or Tamil action films. Actually, The Rock doing dramatic, over-the-top (for their time) Captain Vijayakanth-style action films would be a viewing experience regardless of the country.
