It appears that Rockstar’s recently released remaster compilation Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy—The Definitive Edition isn’t being received well. Handled by Grove Street Games, GTA: The Trilogy has drawn some of the lowest—if not the lowest—reviews of any Rockstar title on Metacritic.
A Near-Rock Bottom Score for GTA: The Trilogy—Definitive Edition
Following its release after weeks of hype, the game was released with—according to many users—a lack of some licensed music, frame rate problems, texture mistakes, and overall bad optimization for PC and present-day consoles.
It’s somewhat surprising as the trailers for the remastered GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas looked good. However, it’s important to note that most of those trailers focused on cutscenes. Also, the major improvements came via retexturing of scenery, clothing, weather effects, and lighting.
Players have noted that there are issues even with those improvements. Diehards for any franchise will overlook an issue if everything else is high quality and the game is playable—especially in the case of gameplay or optimization.
Then you have a case like GTA: The Trilogy where it appears to be a big mess on multiple fronts.
As a result, users took to the aggregate platform and gave their frontline reviews of the title on different platforms. Right now, the score sits at an average of 0.6 on Metacritic.
The PlayStation 4 and PS5 versions have gotten 0.7 and 0.9 respectively. On the Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S consoles, GTA: The Trilogy shares a 0.5 score. There’s a 0.6 score for the Switch version which it shares with the PC version.
As expected, the modding community has already taken to fixing things that it might take days for the developers to fix.
Rockstar’s Response
In addition to grimly unimpressed scores, players are also demanding refunds. Rockstar has pulled the game from the Rockstar Launcher for a time and in its first social media update, Grove Street Games CEO Thomas Williamson tweeted:
It’s so fun to see players out there really enjoying what we’ve put together for them. I’m honestly enjoying this unparalleled level of scrutiny on our studio. Today we are celebrating our monumental project launch, while we work on updates. 😊
The replies were a mix of support and just not having it at all. It wasn’t a hard drag as you’d see Metacritic. If you’ve gotten your hands on the trilogy, what do you think of it? Let us know in the comments.
