Kamaru Usman’s belt might be feeling secure for now, but UFC welterweight Sean Brady just crashed into the top ten.
He earned a gruelling unanimous decision win over Michael Chiesa at UFC Vegas 43, subjecting Chiesa to three rounds of punishment. Brady’s prodigious wrestling proved too much even for one of the finest grapplers in the sport, and although he was ultimately unable to secure the submission he spent three rounds looking for, Sean Brady made a statement with the victory.
Is Sean Brady the Future of the UFC Welterweight Division?
He took to Instagram afterward to declare that he wasn’t even close to finished with the division. “Didn’t show a 10th of what I wanted to sometimes it be like that i had to dig deep and get the win thank you to my fiancé my team and my family and friends for the support”
Chiesa, meanwhile, congratulated the Philadelphia native on a tough win and showed his passion for competition.
“Disappointed I didn’t get the win tonight but I’d be a liar if I said I didn’t have fun out there. Nothing but respect for @seanbradymma and the Philly crew.”
Not long before the scheduled fight, Chiesa was singing Brady’s praises. With this win over the no. 6 ranked welterweight, Sean Brady will surely be crashing into the top ten from his previous no. 14 position. “We knew who Sean Brady was before he even got in the UFC.
I think LFA reached out to [my teammate] Tyler McGuire and asked if he wanted to fight Sean Brady. So he’s been on the radar for a long time. The rumblings coming out of the Philly camp that there’s this tough up and coming kid Sean Brady.
We’ve always known who he is. I bet if you call Sean Shelby, a lot of people have turned down the Sean Brady fight.
He’s got the undefeated prospect aura about him but it’s less lucrative to a lot of guys than Khamzat because at least Khamzat, that guy’s name is in everybody’s household right now […] Nobody wants to fight Sean Brady because he’s tough, he’s undefeated and not a lot of people know who he is.”
Sean Brady may well be on a path to take on the seemingly unassailable welterweight champ, Kamaru Usman. Usman is the #1 ranked pound-for-pound fighter on the planet, and with his recent blistering decision win over Colby Covington, seems like he’ll stay that way for a while.
However, with the likes of Khamzat Chimaev and Sean Brady, undefeated wrestlers with devastating striking ability, climbing the ranks, perhaps it’s only a matter of time before we see the champ dethroned.
