Recently, one of AEW’s lead commentators has been fighting a serious battle. Good Ol’ JR has been fighting skin cancer, and hasn’t hid it. He’s mentioned the battle a number of times on the Grilling JR podcast. Despite this, he’s been able to keep steady with his work in AEW – showing no signs of the struggle. He gave a classic performance at Full Gear, adding to the moment of Hangman Page finally winning the AEW World Championship among others – but Jim Ross could miss a few upcoming episodes of Dynamite.
Not Leaving AEW, But Jim Ross Might Miss Some TV Tapings
While speaking on the Grilling JR podcast, Ross would speak about how his battle with skin cancer would lead to him missing some TV. He would need to do 22 sessions of radiation treatment, and November is set to be a rough month.
“I do believe in sharing with the fans and maybe to a faulting degree. I’ve got a big month of November, it’s going to be an aggressive month.I wanted to make sure I can still do my stuff. I’ll know more about that after November 22, if I can’t I’ve got to put my health first. I think that’s the right thing to do, ego wise people say ‘Are you worried about getting replaced?’ hell no. I work for Tony Khan, I work for a different man than what I worked for in the past. He has been nothing but amazing in this whole process to the point of whatever you need we’ll take care of you, whatever you need to do to get you healthy again we’re ready to take every step of the way with you.”
Who Will Fill His Spot?
If Jim Ross is to miss some episodes of AEW Dynamite, he will have plenty of people to step in. AEW is spoiled for choice with commentary options, and that leaves plenty of options. Excalibur & Tony Schiavone could simply run a two man booth. Chris Jericho, CM Punk & Ricky Starks all do both commentary alongside their wrestling duties.
However, given their praise on Dark & from Tony Khan himself – we will likely see Taz step up and help out on Dynamite. Khan has called Excalibur & Taz his very own ‘Statler and Waldorf”, which is a perfect comparison. They’re great together, and even Shchiavone can’t spoil their fun.
All of us here at TheOvertimer wish Jim Ross the best in his battle with skin cancer. It’s a rough hand to be dealt, but if anyone can beat it – it’s him. To quote one of his best commentary lines, he’s tougher than a 2$ steak.
