Comedian Dave Chappelle’s appearance at Duke Ellington School of the Arts Georgetown has reportedly been postponed on the grounds that there would be a huge protest.
Dave Chappelle’s Appearance At A School Has Been Postponed Over Fears Of Students Walking Out
Dave, for his part, has faced increasing scrutiny in response to his sketch show entitled ‘The Closer.’ The comedian was alleged to have made jokes which were deemed to be transphobic.
As a consequence, several employees at Netflix staged a walkout protest in order to demand that the network remove his show. Although Dave has received support since then, it looks as though the jury is still out.
According to Politico, Dave’s appearance will change from November 23 to April 22 on the grounds that students were going to hold a walkout protest.
But in this way, the school is hoping that they can bridge the gap between all those groups who may be affected by what Dave has said or done.
In an official statement, the school said:”The Closer…sparked a national debate around race, gender, sexuality and cancel culture. As a learning institution that champions inclusivity.
“We also believe moving forward [which] would be a missed opportunity for a teachable moment.” In response, Dave has not taken that to heart. In fact, he has shown more bravery by respecting other people’s right to have an opinion.
This is, ironically, something that has been missing from Dave’s critics. Instead of trying to have an open dialogue with him, it looks as though his detractors are more concerned about censoring him.
And with him being a comedian, it goes against everything that he would naturally stand for. Nevertheless, Dave understood people’s choices.
In an official statement given on his behalf, his publicist said: “Dave is an artist and activist and applauds the school taking time to develop creative and critical thinkers.
“He supports the school’s effort to contribute to open conversations vs cancellations.” It is not clear just how far this criticism will go before Dave has to do something else.
But on current reflection, it is clear that Dave’s show is making some noise. With that in mind, it is in Netflix’s benefit to keep the show on the air.
