Dwayne Johnson has proven himself to be a versatile entertainer as one of the best wrestlers in history and then moving on to stardom in various films, but the Rock has his eyes set on something bigger — being the next James Bond.
In many ways, it’s the next logical step for him as he’s taken the box office world by storm and he’d be following in his grandfather’s footsteps.
It’d definitely be an interesting change for him as he’s been in both action and comedy movie, and he may be better known for the latter.
Bond. James Bond.
In a recent interview with Esquire.com, he talked about Peter Maivia being in You Only Live Twice in a minor role.
In the Esquire video, Dwayne said, “Yes, my grandfather was a Bond villain in You Only Live Twice with Sean Connery. Very, very cool.
“And I would like to follow in his footsteps and be the next Bond. I don’t wanna be a villain. You gotta be Bond.”
With Daniel Craig deciding to step down, the search for a new James Bond will begin, and while there are various factors in Dwayne’s favor, there is one that isn’t.
Dwayne’s an A lister
Historically, new James Bonds weren’t A listers and were generally unknown prior to their roles, so Dwayne becoming the next one would make him the first A list celebrity to become the secret agent.
Also, given he’s arguably more known for comedies than drama or action movies may be a strike against him as well.
On the plus side, he wouldn’t be the first non-Englishman to fill the role, strictly speaking, as Sean Connery was Scottish, Pierce Bronson was Irish, and George Lazenby was Australian.
Another mark in Dwayne’s favor is that Barbara Broccoli, who co runs the franchise with her half brother Michael G. Wilson, as confirmed Bond will stay a man.
According to the dailymail.co.uk Barbara spoke on this to Variety last year.
“He can be of any color, but he is male. I believe we should be creating new characters for women – strong female characters.
“I’m not particularly interested in taking a male character and having a woman play it. I think women are far more interesting than that.”
It looks like Dwayne will have a decent shot at playing the role, though we’re curious if the world is ready for an American as James Bond. That should cause some discussion.
We think this would be a fun role for him, but we want to hear what you think. Would the Rock be a good James Bond? Let us know in the comments below.
