AEW PPV events often come with a new signee showing up at some point. All Out 2021 had Bryan Danielson, Adam Cole, and Ruby Soho – and despite no Casino Battle Royale on the show, Full Gear brought a new name to AEW. The franchise player of Ring of Honor – and perhaps the face of the company, Jay Lethal has signed with AEW. However, this might not be the end of AEW taking from Ring of Honor, as Tony Khan is interested in trying to get the ROH Tape Library.
Tony Khan Knows Ring Of Honor Has Some Great Stuff To Offer In Their Backlog
During a media scrum ahead of Full Gear 2021 – Tony Khan was actually asked about his interest in buying the tape library or signing talent from Ring of Honor. We now know talks have been made as Jay Lethal has been signed, but the following quote sums up his thoughts on the tape library.
“Well, there’s a lot of great stuff there. They’ve had a lot of great matches and shows in their library and they have some very good talent. I can’t say with any certainty. But we’ll see what happens on the business side and as far as the talent goes. I would say stay tuned to AEW. There’s Dynamite every Wednesday, Rampage tomorrow, Full Gear on Saturday. You never know who is going to show up in AEW. As for the business side of it, I’m good friends with a lot of people in the company of Ring of Honor and the agent that represents them is my neighbor in LA. He lives down the block and is a friend of mine. I am very familiar with what is going on there but I can’t say with any degree of certainty what will happen on the business side.”
AEW Could Use The ROH Tape Library Very Nicely
Right now, there is a lot of mixed signals if the tape library is even for sale. However, if it is – AEW might be the best place to own it. They have a lot of ex-ROH talent on their roster, from The Young Bucks to CM Punk to Bryan Danielson and beyond. Even names like Homicide have popped up. Being able to use the footage from the ROH library for video packages could be a big help to AEW, as they only have a few years of their own to pull from.
Add in that AEW is interested in launching a streaming service, and offering the full ROH backlog alongside shows like All In and the AEW backlog? That’d be worth 10 bucks a month for sure. There’s even an outside chance that Khan could keep ROH alive. Fans have often felt AEW should buy ROH, and use it as a second brand of sorts. It would suck to see ROH reduced to a developmental show, but it would keep it’s legacy alive.
