Michael Bisping, former UFC welterweight champ, has weighed in on the Conor McGregor debate, and claims the former champ may well return to winning ways whenever he comes back to the UFC.
Bisping, speaking on his Believe You Me podcast, said that it’s entirely possible that McGregor knocks the champ out in a title fight.
Bisping Says Conor Could Knock Oliveira Out in Championship Fight
“Conor’s done a great job being absolutely polarizing, you know. Polarizing is great, half of them want you to f***ing win with passion and the other half want you f***ing lose with passion.
And when you are a f***ing fight guy, that’s the best position to be in. ‘Cos either way people are tuning in to watch you fight. And hey, it’s not impossible.
He could come back and knock out Charles Oliveira. Of course he could. It would be insulting to say otherwise. Of course he could. Do I see it happening? I don’t know. More than likely, not.”
Bisping quickly said a finish in McGregor’s favor is unlikely, but when it comes to “The Notorious”, it’s hard to predict exactly what will happen. Conor McGregor’s famous knockout power catapulted him straight to the top of the UFC during his meteoric rise through the ranks.
He famously dispatched Jose Aldo via knockout in thirteen seconds to earn himself the UFC featherweight title. He did it again, stopping then-lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez in only the second round of their fight – at the time, considered a late finish for the freshly crowned double champ.
However, in the years since, barring a solitary first-round win over Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, McGregor’s legendary punching power has been absent. In fact, Conor McGregor’s lightweight record has been truly abysmal. In four fights at lightweight he boasts only one win, and that was the Alvarez fight.
A failed title challenge against Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2018 ended in a rear naked choke for the Irishman, and in 2021 McGregor faced consecutive knockout losses of his own against Dustin Poirier. This taste of Conor’s own medicine culminated in a broken leg for the former double champ, and McGregor remains sidelined with the gruesome injury.
However, when Conor McGregor returns to the UFC, he may well be able to jump the queue and take a shot at the champ. McGregor may well take a few warm-up fights first, like a fourth Poirier fight, a trilogy fight against Nate Diaz, or even a belated grudge match against Khabib’s heir apparent Islam Makhachev.
