One of the main talking points over the last couple of years from wrestlers is creative freedom, and it’s highlighted how some companies looks to shoehorn talent into their own vision.
As artists in their own right, wrestlers want to make money but also need and want to express their views.
So, it’s no wonder we’ve heard many saying that’s why they want to leave the WWE and other companies and go elsewhere.
We’ve heard tons about how the WWE is restrictive to one’s creative freedom unless it’s something Vince McMahon agrees with. But there are also reports people are afraid to talk to him, and if that’s true how much of the talent comes forward?
AEW is more open as Tony Kahn has stated he’s up for listening to any idea, but he has the final say like Vince or any promoter.
Impact Wrestling isn’t that different from AEW as Scott D’Amore will listen to any idea and work with the talent to make it and them the best they can be.
It’s a goal of any promotor, but each one has a different way of going about it.
The difference shows
That methodology is what has helped the WWE to become the top company in the world over the last 40 years as Vince refuses to allow his vision to be highjacked.
It’s also why the WWE is one of the hardest shows to watch storyline wise. While their matches are often fun and exciting, they’re easily predictable as they follow the same formula night after night.
AEW, Impact Wrestling, and others are more inspired with their shows and we often see things we don’t expect as a result.
By allowing the talent to have more say, it opens the doors to different possibilities.
Impact Wrestling grants more freedom
Moose recently did an interview with Metro.co.uk, and he talked about why he thinks creative freedom is why more stars are willing to sign with Impact Wrestling than WWE or AEW.
“I think that’s one of the reasons why a lot of guys choose to come to Impact over AEW or going to WWE – the freedom that you have to create. I’ve heard that in other companies, that’s not the case at all. You don’t really have freedom at all, it’s up to the writers to decide. If you pitch an idea and generally, if that idea’s good, [Impact Executive Vice President] Scott D’Amore’s obviously not gonna turn it down as long as it’s not gonna get you or the company cancelled.”
It’s important to note that Moose turned down an offer from the WWE because he felt his time in Impact wasn’t done and there was more to accomplish.
We went on to talk about his cashing in his Call Your Shot against Josh Alexander at Bound For Glory. It was a move many of us didn’t see coming, and neither did many backstage at Impact either.
“I loved it, because nobody saw that coming. Surprises generally get ruined because everyone has to report about what they saw backstage, who’s a free agent, who’s talking to who.
“Well with this surprise, no one knew when I was gonna cash it. I think maybe a handful of people, even with the boys, knew I was gonna cash in that night. Nobody knew.”
This is what we used to see in the WWE and now seems more a thing with AEW, Impact and Indie companies.
