Rey Mysterio has spent his extraordinary career having accolades heaped on him and deservedly so.
From when I first saw him as Rey Mysterio Jr. in WCW to now, he never fails to put on a fun match if he’s given the chance.
While he’s been in plenty of video games, he hasn’t had his own TV series, but that’s coming with his own show he’s helped to develop with ¡Viva Calavera! and it’ll appear on Cartoon Network Latin America.
The show is called Rey Mysterio vs. La Oscuridad (The Darkness) and it looks like it’s going to be a entertaining one for kids and other fans.
Premise
Rey and a wrestling fan named Oscar (Rey’s real first name. How cool is that?) come together to fight against evil in the ring lucha libre style and the more mysterious supernatural world.
The bad guy is, as you can probably tell from the title, Uroboros. He’s an evil fighter that has somehow channeled dark powers he’s trying to understand.
This sounds like an awesome premise and takes up back to 80s and 90s cartoons with the simple good vs. evil concept with a few wrinkles added in.
Some commentary on what we can expect only adds to our desire to see the show and we hope it’s a huge success. Special thanks to wrestlinginc.com for the following quotes.
“We are very excited to be able to share with Cartoon Network and Rey Mysterio fans more details and color of this incredible production made in Mexico,” Jaime Jiménez Rión, Vice President of Content and Original Production, WarnerMedia Kids & Family, Latin America, said. “We are confident that you will enjoy the surprises we have in store and that the show will meet all your expectations.”
“To have an action-comedy series on Cartoon Network is a dream come true,” noted ¡Viva Calavera! founders The Skull Brothers. “That it puts Mexico and Lucha Libre at the center is even more, but that it has as its protagonist Rey Mysterio, whom we have admired since we were children, is simply indescribable. We believe that fans will greatly appreciate this new series, the result of the work and passion of so many people.”
The show is set to debut ten episodes in 2022, and as of now there doesn’t appear to have any ties to the WWE as no mention of the company was mentioned in the press release.
While this could get interesting with the way the WWE feels about their talent doing something outside of their sphere of influence, we’re sure it’ll work out.
This sounds like it’s going to be a fun show and we can’t wait to see it.
