With all the news about the WWE releasing Jeff Hardy, it’s only fair that he’s the focus of this day in wrestling history that culminated his career to that point.
After spending 14 combines years with the WWE, Jeff had more than proved himself capable as a fan favorite and a talented Superstar.
Sure, there were always those that wondered if he was a capable world champion due to his size and other issues, but when it came to performing few ever matched him.
Given all of that, when he faced Edge and Triple H in a Triple Threat Match at Armageddon on December 14, 2008 not many expected him to come out the winner.
Breaking through
When it finally happened and Jeff scored the win, fans went insane. It was the culmination of respect and appreciation at what he’d given us throughout his career, and the announcers seemed to sense it as they remained quiet.
More than that, it was the culmination of all the hard work Jeff put in over the years. The WWE needed and wanted something new at the top, and Jeff was that breath of fresh air.
Special thanks to @awrestlinghistorian for the following transcript.
“It was real shocking to the Swanton Bomb. One. Two. Three. People have been waiting for it for so long and it was such a good feeling to watch the replays and see everybody jumping out of their seats.
“But honesty I think it was really fresh. It was about time. Not being arrogant at all, but just to give the fans what they want and I think I earned it.” Jeff Hardy, My Life My Rules documentary.
Behind the scenes support
Jeff and the fans weren’t the only ones that thought he deserved to win, and it’s been reported that it was Michael Hayes’ idea for Jeff to win the championship.
Hayes is best known as the leader of the Fabulous Freebirds in the 80s, but he’s carved out a solid career as a producer, writer, and vice president in the WWE.
It’s obvious Vince McMahon listens to him, and we’re glad he did on this night. It was unexpected, but it was great for Jeff and his fans. It just had a feeling that’s difficult to describe, and that makes it perfect for a this day in wrestling history moment.
