UFC legend Chael Sonnen is facing no less than five battery citations following an altercation in Las Vegas, according to TMZ.
Although Sonnen was handcuffed and detained by police, he ultimately avoided arrest because the police were not there to witness the alleged incident.
Chael Sonnen Cited for Battery in Vegas
Supposedly, Chael Sonnen was seen pounding on the door of a hotel room at the Four Seasons, Las Vegas, about 7pm on Saturday night. A couple walked by, a fight broke out, and Chael Sonnen, as you’d expect, manhandled his hallway opponent.
Chael Sonnen, aged forty-four, probably weighs about two hundred pounds, standing six feet and one inch tall. He made short work of many opponents during his MMA career, so it’s hard to see a civilian posing any kind of serious threat to the man.
Sonnen’s last fight came in 2019, when he lost to Lyoto Machida, but “The American Gangster” had a storied career beforehand. He boasts impressive victories over the likes of Michael Bisping, Wanderlei Silva, and Rampage Jackson. He even challenged Anderson Silva, widely considered the greatest MMA fighter of all time, for his title twice.
Although both fights ended in stoppage losses for Sonnen, the first is legendary in MMA circles. Chael Sonnen outwrestled Silva repeatedly for four of the fight’s five rounds. In one of the biggest shock victories in MMA history, Sonnen lost to Silva via triangle choke in the dying seconds of round five, failing to capture the title.
His later career was marked by both winning and losing streaks, but Chael Sonnen never lost his penchant for trash talk. In fact, he is still considered one of the finest trash talkers in MMA history. Sonnen is best known these days for his UFC analysis and sports commentary, and it remains to be seen whether these allegations will affect his commentary career.
2021 has been marred by repeated legal issues for UFC personalities. Luis Pena was released from his UFC contract following repeated domestic violence allegations. Jon Jones, on the same night as he was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame, was arrested on domestic violence charges and damaged a police cruiser.
Chael Sonnen’s citation comes as something of a surprise, however. His previous legal troubles generally involved business issues, including a 2006 case in which Sonnen pleaded guilty to money laundering.
