With the latest variant of Covid, Omicron, WWE and AEW are reportedly keeping an eye on things and whether shutdown and mandates will return and prevent them from traveling.
If things go back to where they were last year, there’s the likely chance AEW will return to Daily’s place and the WWE would return to the ThunderDome in Tampa Bay or Orlando.
Both companies doing so is pure speculation, but it’s a possibility as other sports leagues are dealing with spikes. The decision to shot down and go back to no crowds will hurt their income.
And with the WWE citing budget cuts for the reasons for their releases, one can only imagine how they’ll react.
Dave Meltzer pointed out the possibility
While this is a relatively logical next step depending on how things work out, Dave Meltzer spoke about this on his show.
Special thanks to Bleedingcool.com for the following transcript.
“I think they’re both going to be pretty confident that Florida will not issue any mandates under any circumstance. Obviously, AEW can go back to Jacksonville and WWE can go back to someplace in Florida. You can always do the Performance Center. The problem is that if you put RAW and SmackDown in front of 300 people again those numbers will crater. So, it’s a bad situation and AEW’s numbers will hurt too.
“I don’t know if they’ll crater as well. They did okay numbers in Jacksonville. Obviously, if there’s no other choice, then yeah we can go through that again. The ThunderDome thing, I mean they did better in the ThunderDome than the Performance Center, so I think that in that sense WWE could look at a ThunderDome again and try to take residency in a building, but it’s hard because, I guess you could do the baseball stadium, because baseball isn’t starting for months, so I guess they’ll go to the Tampa baseball stadium and set up.”
There’s no doubt this will be a difficult decision, and it’s something that’ll be interesting to see how it plays out.
This will hurt fans more than the companies as we’ve grown accustomed to going to events or seeing crowd interaction again, and that’s an aspect that will be difficult for any company to overcome.
