Randy Orton is the perfect straight man in the ring as he’s always serious and looks annoyed with Riddle most of the time, but he admitted that they get along great.
He also jokingly added in a recent interview with The Ringer Wrestling podcast the reason why he and Riddle get along so well in the in the ring.
To quote the Viper, and special thanks to sportskeeda.com for the quotes in this article:
“I think one of the main reasons me and Riddle come across so happy in the ring together is because he’s the one guy that can grow my favorite strain (laughs). I’m not lying. I’m not lying.”
It’s about having fun
We all love to have fun, and once Orton and Riddle got used to each other, they developed a real friendship.
And because of that, Riddle’s helped crack Orton’s always serious character and open up to having some fun, which Orton talked about in greater detail.
“Once I was around him for a little while, I got to like the guy. We have a lot more in common than I thought we would. I definitely respect him and his attributes, but the attitude initially I wasn’t a big fan of. Now it’s almost endearing,
“Seriously, I’m having fun out there. Monday, they had me put on a graduation cap and gown. Whenever they are tasking me some with kind of ridiculous stuff, you wouldn’t think you would see Randy Orton in a cap and gown. I laughed because I was excited because I knew the fans were going to be like, ‘what the hell is he doing?’ After the career that I’ve had and all the somewhat monotonous intensity, I did that for so long, if I crack a smile and break the fourth wall or whatever, if you can tell I’m having fun at this point in my career, I feel like it draws you in more because I was so against letting people in before.
“It was just ‘character, character, character. I have to be mean and angry and intense and they have to believe I want to rip this guys head off.’ Now, I can still do that, but I’ve been around long enough to where, I get let off easy when I break character or when I do things that maybe a babyface wouldn’t do. There might be a sign in Gorilla that says ‘no eyepokes,’ and even though in parenthesis it doesn’t say ‘except Randy Orton,’ I know it’s still there. I can get away with this, but compared to the stuff I used to get away with, if I get away with an eyepoke, it’s okay. I’m having fun and staying true to who I am as a heel, which is what brought me to the dance, but I’m able to have more leniency with how I do that.”
It’s clear they’re both enjoying themselves and teaming them together was a stroke of genius. Odd pairings are fun when they click when it’s Mankind and the Rock, Kane and X-Pac, or RK-Bro.
It looks like they’re all having fun breaking the barriers between being serious and goofy around as characters, and it adds a whole new element to them and the tag division.
More than that, it’s added a new layer to Orton’s character and going forward we’ll never know when he’s being serious or goofing around as we’ll be an RKO away from finding out.
It also helps Riddle in so many ways as he gets to work with one of the best in pro wrestling history and soak up as much knowledge and experience as he can, which will only make him and those working with him better in the long run.
