Every show has a moment that leaves fans scratching their heads like David Arquette winning the WCW world title, but this day in wrestling history, January 1, 2007, not only had Kevin Federline beating John Cena.
There was even more alleged fallout from this moment as well, so calling this a flop isn’t out of the question.
It’s no secret the WWE will reach out to any entertainer that has a large name to come on their shows. It often helps boost ratings as well as visibility for the WWE in general, as well as a possible boost to the movie or album the artist has coming out.
So it’s understandable that the WWE would bring K-Fed onboard for a short run to capitalize on him being married to Britney Spears and help promote his album America’s Most Hated.
Where he antagonized John Cena and faced him on Raw in a no disqualification match.
Not exactly a win
Since the match stipulation was no DQ, it was a given K-Fed would get some help and there was plenty of interference, but it was Umaga nailing Cena with the championship belt that gave K-Fed the win.
This storyline started at Cyber Sunday in November 2006 when K-Fed interfered in the main event and cost Cena the match. Then the following night K-Fed challenged Cena to a match on Raw on January 1, 2007.
After K-Fed pinned him, Cena came back for Raw’s main event, a 4 on 1 handicap match that he lost by DQ, but he did hit a F-U on K-Fed to close the night out.
The fallout
While he was well received by WWE in general, entertainment news had a field day as they reported that when Britney laughed when she saw his segment.
Allegedly, Federline went on a rampage and destroyed various bits of property. It was reported to be the final straw and Britney filed for divorce the following day and their divorce was finalized in July.
How true that is is anyone’s guess as sensationalism is the dogma of the media, but hit segment was pretty hilarious and not in a good way.
As for giving his album a boost, it sold a reported 6k copies its first week and roughly 16k overall.
This is far from what all the parties involved wanted, but in the end this day in wrestling history is one of those where second guessing is prevalent.
