UFC heavyweight Tai “Shoeyvasa” Tuivasa is loving his career resurgence of late and wants to do something unusual with Leonardo DiCaprio. With yet another stunning knockout win under his belt, he is surveying the landscape and taking pride in his signature celebration. Tuivasa is notorious for celebrating wins with a “shoey”.
The “shoey” is an Australian drinking tradition in which one drinks beer from a shoe. Tuivasa, who hails from Western Sydney, told The MMA Hour that he looks forward to knocking his opponents out so he can celebrate with an ice cold beer fresh from a pair of Jordans.
Tai Tuivasa wants to do a shoey with Leonardo DiCaprio
“I’m a man of extremes, so if I’m training, I’m training. Trying to eat good, do all that bullsh*t, and when I’m not, I’m not. I’m at the buffet, I’m at the bar, whatever.”
Before a fight, he says, he’s not drinking any alcohol at all. Often, the first drink Tuivasa has in months is right there in the Octagon before his rabid fans. “That’s why I try to do as many as I can before I get out of [the arena] and see how p*ssed [drunk] I can get.”
The urgency of Tuivasa’s drinking found the heavyweight at odds with a member of the Nevada Athletic Commission, who tried to end the celebration early at UFC 269.
“I had a bit of an argument with one of the guys, really pushing me out of there and really putting me off. I feel that the fans come to watch me to knock people out and do shoeys, and I’ve got some guy who’s not even a ref and doesn’t work for the UFC, he’s f*cking pushing me in the back and trying to get me out of there. C’mon, man.”
As much as Tuivasa is enjoying the high life right now, there’s one man that the heavyweight truly wants to enjoy a shoey with. That’s the Wolf of Wall Street star Leonardo DiCaprio, of whom Tuivasa claims he is a huge fan.
“That’s my guy. I love what he does. I love his movies, and I just think he’s just the sh*t. I’d love to hang out with him.”
Perhaps we’ll see DiCaprio hand a shoe over to Tai Tuivasa when he faces Derrick Lewis in Houston at UFC 271 this February. What do you think of the Australian shoey? Is it going to catch on in the States thanks to Tai Tuivasa? Let us know in the comments.
