“Suga” Sean O’Malley is promising his fans a “killing spree” in the future, but it’s not quite as soon as you might expect from one of the UFC’s hottest prospects. On his Suga Sunday Service podcast, O’Malley said he’ll be taking scalps in 2023, but his options in 2022 are limited by a thumb fracture he sustained knocking Raulian Paiva out in December.
“I can’t fight March 5, it’s too soon. And I don’t think they’re having a Vegas card in April, in May. I might not fight for a while. I look at it one way. If I don’t fight until June or July, it just gives me time to get better and improve.
O’Malley Promises “Killing Spree” 2023… not 2022
That’s where I haven’t been able to train since my fight. I’ve had a f*cking fractured thumb since my fight. I haven’t been able to train, so I haven’t been able to improve since the fight until now. I get my cast off soon. That’ll give me a couple of months to improve.”
Sean O’Malley is a rising star in the bantamweight division. His flashy persona, creative trash talk, and penchant for one-punch knockouts make him an attractive prospect for the UFC, who are still seeking to replicate the crossover success of their biggest star, Conor McGregor.
Despite his brash in-Octagon persona, O’Malley’s career trajectory has remained decidedly conservative. He has preferred consistently building his brand and taking smaller opponents to seeking out ranked fighters. He claims this is to increase his profile in the promotion and maximize his earning opportunities.
This long view – rare in a sport where careers tend to be short, and fighters’ memories even shorter – may be why he looks to 2023 to be the year of Sean O’Malley.
“I’m not too worried about it, ideally I get three fights in a year. That’s kind of where my head’s at. I don’t know if it’s more money or if it’s —ah, I think it’s competition, I love competing. But I just want to get back in the gym and improve.
So if I only fight two, if I get one in July and November or December, I might only get two this year. Fight out the contract, and then boom, into 2023 with a fat f*cking contract and just go on a killing spree.”
