Wrestling Salvage Yard: Tekno Team 2000
Let’s attempt this again with a 90s WWE gimmick as we try to salvage Tekno Team 2000! We’ll get right with WWE’s creative misadventures eventually, folks.
What in the Hell Was This Team?
Honestly, I couldn’t tell you. The duo—Erik Watts and Chad Fortune—teamed up years earlier as they were college friends who broke into the business together. So, they had some familiarity with each other as partners.
Once WWE got their hands on them in 1995, they were renamed Troy and Travis respectively and given the team name “Tekno Team 2000”. I don’t know why they were called Troy and Travis with no last name or even if really mattered if they had names at all. Even WWE shaded their own creation:
The gimmick was lousy, nothing here matters about what Tekno Team 2000 is supposed to be in the company. They were billed as the tag team of the future and the tag team face of the New Generation.
Here’s the problem with that: neither was particularly good. I’d say they were decent at best—although many would say that’s being generous. If your gimmick is that you’re a tag team of the future and you have the ambitious task of pulling the New Generation into the 2000s, your team should be innovative and exciting as hell.
We should’ve been seeing a mix of the Dudleys, The Hardys, and Edge & Christian-levels of innovation in 1995 before any of those teams showed up. Instead, we got some awkward mid stuff in silvery gear.
Tekno Team 2000 was sent to USWA for development but eventually, the team was ditched as WWE really didn’t know what in the hell the team was either nor what to do with them.
Salvaging Tekno Team 2000
I’ll tell you what, those early 90s WWE gimmicks are hard to tackle. This really isn’t a salvageable team because the wrestlers involve were meh to the point that developmental and nepotism—in Watts’ case—couldn’t help them improve.
What was salvageable was the color scheme of this team and silvery jackets. I thought those were pretty cool. If anything, this gimmick could’ve been salvaged if it was given to the Bodydonnas as both men were good wrestlers and knew what to do in the ring. They didn’t just look awkward and could do some pretty cool tag work.
However, if we’re trying to salvage Tekno Team 2000 with the original wrestlers, that’s just a fail and a half.
