Nate Diaz, fan favorite and early Ultimate Fighter alumnus, has only one fight left on his long, lucrative UFC contract. Many fans are clamoring for a third winner-takes-all fight against his longtime nemesis Conor McGregor, but Nate Diaz himself simply doesn’t see it happening.
Speaking with Adam’s Apple, Diaz said that McGregor simply isn’t good enough to face him a third time. “Not right now. He’s got a lot of work to do.”
Nate Diaz: McGregor has “a lot of work to do” before trilogy fight
Nate Diaz could be referring to Conor McGregor’s ongoing recovery. The Irish superstar broke his leg fighting Dustin Poirier last July, and although he has promised a return to the Octagon (and remains in the top ten lightweight rankings), he has yet to confirm a fight or even a return date.
Diaz may also be making snide reference to Conor’s abysmal record of late, with only one win in his last four fights. Nate Diaz’s record in his last four fights is identical, with his sole win since 2016 a decision over Anthony Pettis.
Of course, the UFC would surely love to see McGregor fight Diaz once more. Both men are among the promotion’s biggest stars. Realistically, neither Conor nor Nate Diaz is likely to compete for a title any time soon.
Locking a big-money grudge match between two of the last generation’s greats is exactly the sort of prospect that has the UFC brass salivating. Currently, the two are 1-1 against one another, with Diaz defeating McGregor via rear naked choke the first time around, and Conor edging out a brutal decision win in their second fight.
When asked who he would like to fight for what may well be his final appearance in the UFC, Nate Diaz had a familiar name. “I’m on my last fight on my contract right now.
I would like to fight Dustin Poirier now. Next month when sh*t changes or people win and start doing something entertaining, or something going on, it’s all going to be different, I’m sure.”
Nate Diaz continues to take shots at potential opponents via social media, a habit that he himself calls “obnoxious”, perhaps yet another jab at the Tweet-and-delete happy McGregor. ““That sh*t’s obnoxious to me.
For me, I got a bigger following than the rest of the people and they’re not letting me fight, so what do I got to do? I’ve got to sh*t on them from the internet.” Would you be excited to see McGregor vs Diaz 3? Let us know in the comments.
