Former two-division UFC champ and current UFC commentator Daniel Cormier has seen a lot of stars come and go in his time with the promotion. Paddy Pimblett, with only one UFC fight under his belt, reminds DC of the early days of the UFC’s biggest star. Pimblett entering the Octagon on home soil at UFC London, he said on DC & RC could be the same catapult to stardom as Conor McGregor’s appearance at UFC Dublin all those years ago.
“You know what I think back to? I think back to Conor McGregor fighting [Diego Brandao] in Ireland. He was young in his career, he had barely started, and he got to fight at home in front of those people. It just elevated him, I mean, right away. Conor McGregor was on his way.
DC Compares Paddy Pimblett at UFC London to McGregor Fighting in Dublin
You strap the rocket ship to his back and he was to the moon. Because next thing you know, they stuck him in Boston where outside of being in Ireland, going to Boston is as close to Ireland as you can get.”
With Paddy Pimblett’s distinctive accent, unshakeable confidence, and penchant for early finishes, comparisons to a young Conor McGregor are easy to make. If Pimblett can make his mark at UFC London once again, with a trademark first-round finish, we might be seeing the meteoric rise of another major UFC star.
“It was like at every turn he took the right step. Pimblett goes and does something special on Saturday, it’ll be the same type of situation. Because everything plays a part.
The only thing missing from his debut was that massive explosion from the fans after he did what he did. If he can do that this weekend, he will get that. Then that highlight will play over and over again.
You’ll see the people throwing their beers, the crowd will be going insane, they’ll be singing his walkout song. This is a recipe for him and Tom Aspinall to truly propel themselves to the next level of stardom inside the UFC.”
With the UFC’s stars of today entering the twilight years of their careers, the time is ripe for a charismatic young fighter to step up and take over. Conor McGregor’s best years may well be far behind him, and the UFC needs another major star as the face of the fight game. Could it be Paddy Pimblett?
DC did make one mistake – Conor McGregor fought in Boston before fighting in Dublin. Apart from that, do you think this prediction will come true? Let us know in the comments.
