Kayla Harrison wants to be the “greatest combat sports athlete ever”. This is a title, she claims, she will inherit from Henry Cejudo. Her recent re-signing with lower-tier MMA promotion PFL might put a stop to those plans, however, particularly considering that the world’s best female fighters are in Bellator and the UFC.
Harrison recently told The Schmo that she’s thrilled to return to PFL, but still has Nunes and Cyborg firmly in her sights.
Kayla Harrison Wants To be “Greatest Combat Sports Athlete Ever”
“Life is good. I’m very blessed. I’m satisfied. I’m at peace with it. Free agency was a long and winding, up and down, roller coaster road, and I’m happy that it’s over. I’m excited to get back in the cage and do what I love.”
Will Kayla Harrison test herself against the best the other promotions have to offer? She says Nunes and Cyborg are both in her future. That’s how Kayla Harrison will become the “greatest combat sports athlete ever”.
“I’m coming for the title of Greatest Combat Sports Athlete Ever. Right now, Henry [Cejudo] has it. I’ll give it to him. He has it. But I’m coming for that title.
I just think I have to keep putting one foot in front of the other. I definitely have to beat Cyborg. I’d really like to fight Amanda, beat Amanda, if I’m gonna go ahead and say it.
That’s obviously in the cards. I’ve got to win a couple more titles. He has one gold medal, I have two. He has two UFC belts, I have 2 PFL belts. But if I win belts in every major organization, or beat champions from every major organization, then does that make me the greatest of all time?”
Harrison was recently released from her old PFL contract. During the brief window of her free agency, Harrison was seen frequenting UFC events, a rare nod from the organization to a star from a competing promotion. The UFC is still widely accepted as the top-tier MMA promotion, although Bellator’s home-grown star AJ McKee is hoping to give Dana White a run for his money.
Ultimately, Harrison returned to PFL, a disappointment to many fans who hoped to see Harrison vs Nunes in the near future. With Amanda Nunes currently focusing on a rematch against Julianna Pena, however, in an attempt to reclaim her title following one of the biggest upset wins in MMA history, Harrison will have to wait a little longer.
Considering she’s got the most lucrative contract in women’s MMA history, we’re sure Kayla Harrison will be happy to do exactly that.
Will we ever see Harrison vs Nunes? Let us know in the comments.
