Right now, Jake Atlas is sadly watching professional wrestling from the sidelines. During his AEW Rampage debut against Adam Cole, he’d suffer a leg injury. He’s on the road to recovery, and is almost sure to have some major success in AEW – but there was a chance for him to be a massive star within WWE.
Jake Atlas Was Told He Was NXT’s Biggest Babyface
Prior to joining AEW, Jake Atlas got his first major exposure with wrestling fans as part of the NXT roster. While not much of substance came out of this run, Triple H was extremely impressed with Atlas since his debut match. While appearing on a Highspots Sign It Live, Atlas recalls the lead writer for the show and Triple H said to him that ‘We have our next big babyface.’
“My first WWE TV match was Dexter Lumis. It was the first NXT tapings of the pandemic era. We had already been shut down and the only thing running was Raw and SmackDown. We taped like five episodes of NXT at Full Sail. It was the first time we went back and the matches were out of order and whatever. I remember them saying, ‘You’re debuting on TV.’ It was cool…it was meant for him, it started a program for him.
The social media accounts were like, ‘we have two debuts,’ and they really treated it like I was being introduced as well. He was awesome to work with. It’s funny in retrospect, the one thing I remember from that match is coming back from the curtain, and the lead writer at the time and Triple H were like, ‘We have our next big babyface,’ talking to me. Unfortunately, nothing came out of that, but it was nice to hear it after the match,”
Set For Stardom In AEW
Once Atlas returns from the injured list, fans expect him to jump right into the hunt for the TNT Championship. There is a chance he aligns with Swerve Strickland & Keith Lee, who have united against those who are looking to halt the progress of fresh signings to the company.
One way or another, Atlas is going to become a star in AEW. Tony Khan wanted to sign him from the start, even originally viewing him as a bigger potential star than Jungle Boy.
