Cody Rhodes made headlines as one of the architects and executive vice presidents of AEW when the company was launching and then did everything he could to make it as good a product as possible.
He was a success and AEW is still going strong, but Cody decided to part with the company recently and there were more than a few rumors as to why.
Some said it was about money, but the prevailing theory was that Cody and Tony Kahn had a falling out of sorts when Kahn took away the EVPs’ power to book matches and took it on himself.
Given reports indicated that Cody was in charge of the singles booking in AEW in the beginning, having that power stripped away would be annoying and could create fractures in his relationship with Kahn.
But Cody recently spoke at the post WrestleMania scrum about how he was immature for the executive role and doesn’t want to do it again.
Special thanks to @theheelera for the transcript.
“Never say never, just in general because in just six years we’re having this conversation and I’ve completely gone back on what I’ve said. I don’t think I want a management job in wrestling ever again. I don’t think I was mature enough for it. I tried.
“Eddie (Kingston) and Rick (Starks), you mentioned them both, all I did was put them out there. Seth did the same thing for me. He put me out there. Tony Khan was the one who said ‘Yes!’ I had said, ‘We don’t have to hire everybody from the open challenge’ and we basically did.”
Difference of opinion?
It sounds like it was a difference in opinion on who they should sign and who they shouldn’t, but that doesn’t mean there were more problems we have no way of knowing about.
Cody could be talking about how he handled being denied or overall and things deteriorated over time.
Or maybe it was just the natural end to a relationship.
Whatever happened is something that’s happened thousands of times at least in any business or relationship.
Cody’s remained respectful of AEW and hasn’t given them the same harsh treatment he did the WWE, and we’ll see if that continues.
Like Cody said, never day never. We could see him eventually move into a backstage roll with the WWE. Afterall, he avoided the trap his father fell into by taking himself out of the world title picture in AEW.
In WWE, the decision’s out of his hands so we’ll see if he’s going to be the anointed one to take over from Roman Reigns or if he’ll fall into the mid card ranks.
The could hasten a move backstage, but we’ll have to wait and see.
Do you think Cody will take on a managerial spot in WWE if it’s offered to him, or will he remain an in ring talent? Let us know in the comments below.
