Is Conor McGregor going to get yet another shot at the 155 pound title? Recently deposed champ Charles Oliveira, who left the lightweight title vacant when he failed to make weight for UFC 274, is happy to entertain the prospect. Oliveira called McGregor out from the Octagon, and elaborated on what he called a “good fight” at the post-fight press conference.
“I said upstairs that Conor McGregor would be a good fight. But you know, when I was seventh in the rankings, I called them all out, and none of them paid attention to me. So let the matchmakers do their thing. Let my team choose. Let them struggle to fight me.”
Oliveira Calls out McGregor
Conor McGregor once held the UFC lightweight title, in doing so becoming the UFC’s first ever simultaneous two-division champion. Since then, however, he has not won a single fight at lightweight. In fact, Conor’s only victory since that historic fight came against Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone at 170 pounds.
Considering McGregor’s recent abysmal performances, and his tendency to underperform against elite grapplers like Charles Oliveira, it’s understandable that “Do Bronx” wants a piece of the Irish superstar.
Many will be quick to point out that Conor McGregor’s knockout power will pose a serious threat to Charles Oliveira, who tends to win fights via stoppage despite getting knocked down, as happened when he took on Justin Gaethje at UFC 274. For “Do Bronx”, that’s all part of the plan. As far as he’s concerned, he is still the lightweight champ.
“He’s a guy who pushes forward, and I always push forward, and I knew this was going to happen. I’m like a war tank. I keep on moving forward. I knew that I was going to get hit. I knew I was going to hit him. But who wants it more? It all came down to who wanted it more.
I am enlightened, and the champion is Charles Oliveira. That wasn’t going to change. It’s not going to change anything. The champion’s name is Charles Oliveira, and I’m going to keep on pushing and still go for it. I’m not going to get a new title. I’m going to defend it, and that’s pretty simple.”
Oliveira and his team remain adamant that the scale was at fault at the UFC 274 weigh ins. Oliveira weighed in exactly half a pound over the lightweight limit. The UFC lightweight title is now vacant, but Charles Oliveira is widely expected to contend for the title again before anybody else.
