Since making his WWE return, Cody Rhodes has quickly become one of the biggest names in the company. Having left in 2016 and re-invented himself in NJPW & ROH, and also playing a crucial role in starting up AEW – Rhodes has truly reached his prime. He’s proven he’s a fantastic wrestler, and has no plans to change to fit the Sports Entertainment mold of WWE. Instead, he intends to bring the wrestling identity back to WWE.
Rhodes Feels Backlash Was A Wrestling Card, Not Sports Entertainment
While speaking with Sports Illustrated, Cody Rhodes would speak about how he feels he’s hoping to bring WWE back to being wrestling – and not sports entertainment. Backlash was heavy on professional wrestling, as Rhodes would explain while speaking with Sports Illustrated.
“I understand that sports entertainment is the proper term in WWE, but Backlash was a wrestling card,” Rhodes says. “Bell-to-bell, there were stories told in the ring and there was competition and there was violence. It just felt different. If me being back helps bring that identity, then good. Because I’m not changing. I’m going to be me.”
Backlash was easily the best WWE show of the year thus far, with the main event of The Bloodline facing Drew McIntyre & RK-Bro in a six man tag team match being incredibly fun to watch.
Cody Rhodes Is Not Finished With Seth Rollins
He would also address his feud with Seth Rollins. At both Wrestlemania & Backlash, Rhodes was able to defeat Rollins – but this feud is not yet at it’s finale. During the same interview with Sports Illustrated, Rhodes would say the following.
“When it comes to Seth, I was really satisfied with our two matches. It was pure wrestling. I thought that chapter was closed, but I’m looking forward to what’s next between us. That curb stomp last week on Raw was right on my forehead, so we’re not finished yet.”
