Netflix is cracking down on backlash from woke workers by releasing a ‘culture memo’ to employees that suggests they quit if they are offended by the content that airs on the streaming platform.
The company has been the target of scrutiny from its own employees after a comedy special starring Dave Chappelle was deemed insensitive. Chappelle makes several jokes about the transgender community and some have called for him to be ‘cancelled’ as a result.
Netflix Releases ‘Culture Memo’ To Employees That Encourages Them To Leave If They’re Offended
There have been employee walkouts and protests calling for Netflix to remove content featuring Chappelle and anything else considered offensive. But now Netflix is taking a stand with an internal memo titled “Netflix Culture — Seeking Excellence” in which the company vows to not “censor specific artists or voices”. The memo’s message is simple – if you don’t like what Netflix has to offer, feel free to go elsewhere.
“Entertaining the world is an amazing opportunity and also a challenge because viewers have very different tastes and points of view. So we offer a wide variety of TV shows and movies, some of which can be provocative. To help members make informed choices about what to watch, we offer ratings, content warnings and easy to use parental controls,” the message began.
“Not everyone will like — or agree with — everything on our service. While every title is different, we approach them based on the same set of principles: we support the artistic expression of the creators we choose to work with; we program for a diversity of audiences and tastes; and we let viewers decide what’s appropriate for them, versus having Netflix censor specific artists or voices,” the memo continued.
“As employees we support the principle that Netflix offers a diversity of stories, even if we find some titles counter to our own personal values.Depending on your role, you may need to work on titles you perceive to be harmful. If you’d find it hard to support our content breadth, Netflix may not be the best place for you”.
In addition to taking a firm stance against the woke individuals who work for the company, the employee memo also addresses the need to cut down on corporate spending and tells them to “spend our members’ money wisely’.
This approach comes after Netflix has seen a significant decrease in subscribers and faces hearty competition against Amazon, Disney, and Apple’s streaming services.
